The 1993 Don Valley Bears were to play in the BNGL National Division North with North Yorkshire Hawks, Dundee Whalers, Fife 49ers and the Clydesdale Colts. Initially it is thought their manager contacted the BNGL to try and drop down to the Premier Division Midlands conference. This could not be arranged so they stayed in the National division facing long road trips to Scotland. They played Hawks at home, travelled to Fife and played Dundee at home before travelling to North Yorkshire at which time they had informed the league they no longer had the financial resources to fulfill their away fixtures. The BNGL then technically 'kicked' them out for failure to fulfill the full fixture list. The Bears folded very soon after with most of the players going to the South Yorkshire Jaguars. Based: Marlay Park, Dublin, Ireland 1999/2000 Irish Flag League 5-3-0* Team Notes: The Greystone Rebels had been around for 4 years but in the Summer of '97 the squad got so big that they decided it would be more beneficial to create a new "B" team so that new players could get more experience. This "B" team became known as the Gladiators .... however, near the end of the season the Gladiators became one of the stronger teams in the league and were getting a bit fed up of the "B" team tag. Thus they broke away from the Rebels and formed their own entity, handling our own finances and sponsorship. Some players went on to join the Dublin Dragons.
Based: Coolmine RFC, Ashtown, Dublin,

Team Notes: Dublin Lightning were founded by Cillian Smith and Derek Ward. The idea for the team came from discussions both Cillian and Derek had at flag football meetings in 1994/95. They then set about putting together a squad to play in the 1995 season. The team was named by Liam Farrell, a Chargers fan, who currently plays flag football for the Drimnagh Cycos. Dublin "Lightning" was originally meant to be a temporary name for the team, but it grew on everyone, so it stuck. The team mascot is called "Jerome". The first squad in 1995 was a mixture of mainly ex-Dublin Celts players and ex-flag footballers. The team showed they meant business early on by signing Irish National Team Captain and quarterback Eddie Goggins from the Bath Gladiators for their debut season. The team finished 2nd in the IAFL in their first season, but were knocked out in the semi-finals of the play-offs. In 1996, they strengthened their squad by signing two ex-college players from the U.S.: Tom Walls of Brockport St. who was also a GTE All-American nominee, and Dave Neidell of Notre Dame. They also introduced some younger players who were to make an impact in the latter stages of the season. The Lightning won the Shamrock Bowl after defeating the Dublin Tornadoes 26-8. No other Irish team has ever won the Shamrock Bowl in such a short time. Two rookies, Ray McCulloch and Alan Burke were among the scorers in the final. In 1997, the team again qualified for the play-offs, but lost out in the semi-finals mainly due to the absence of some key players through injury. Failed to make the Shamrock Bowl in 1998 and 1999. Dublin Lightning did not survive the years of inactivity from 1998 to 2001, but many former Dublin Lightning people are involved in the new IAFL.Based: Dublin, Ireland 1999/2000 Irish Flag League 4-4-0* Team Notes: Won 41-0 against the Drimnagh Pirates in Ireland's first ever youth american football game. Aimed to become a kitted team, but it never happened. Based: Maylay Park, Rathfarnum and St Anne's
Park, Raheny, Ireland 1999/2000 Irish Flag League 4-4-0* Team Notes: Originally a junior flag team, and went onto join the Irish Senior Flag League. Champions between 1998 and 2000. In 2000, when after finishing 3rd in the league, defeated the Dublin Gladiators 36-0 in the semi-finals, and then the Drimnagh Cycos 18-12 in the final. Also champions in 1997/1998, again defeating the Cycos in the final 18-12. Runners-up in 1995 when they lost to the Marlay Martyrs. Based: Sportslink, Santry (also played at Civil Service GAA, Islandbridge, Dublin,
Ireland) Team Notes: Formed in January 1998 from two previous clubs, the Dublin Tornadoes and the Dublin Bulls. They were Irish Senior League champions in 1998 and reached the Shamrock Bowl in the same year (losing 22-14 to the Carrickfergus Knights). They folded at end of 2000.
Based: Civil Service GAA,
Islandbridge, Dublin, Ireland (also played at
Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland) 1996 Irish League 8-0-0* Team Notes: Several enthusiastic people who threw a football around Herbert Park, Ballsbridge for several months formed the Dublin Tornadoes in 1986. Very quickly the team grew as interest in American Football increased in the capital as well as in other parts of the country. The team moved training location several times due to an ever increasing squad and finally settled in the Phoenix Park. They took part in their first Irish League in 1987, finishing with a respectable 3 wins and 6 losses. Between 1988 and 1991 they participated in the League with an increasing squad and their players gained more playing experience and in some cases coaching experience. They sent some of the senior players to a coaching clinic run by Marty Shottenheimer in Loughborough, England. In 1990 they played a game against the Boston Townies, a senior college team, going down only 12-0. The most respectable result by an Irish team against foreign opposition ever. In 1992 they reached their first Irish League Semi-Final under the guidance of Coach Tony Howie, a previous Notre Dame training assistant. The Antrim Bulldogs beat them with two late 4th quarter touchdowns. In 1993 Coach Dave Curran took over the running of the team and guided they to their first unbeaten season, 13-0 and their first Shamrock Bowl appearance. In the final at the Iveagh Grounds, Crumlin, they defeated arch-rivals the Dublin Celts, 31-2. Coach Brián Sutton took control of the team in 1994 and continued Coach Currans' teachings and method of play throughout the year. They went through the year with 10 wins and only one loss. Again, they reached and won the Shamrock Bowl in 1994, beating the Carrickfergus Knights 21-15 in the final, played in Newry Co. Down. Coach Curran returned to the Football Forum, becoming Offensive Coach with the newly formed Irish National Team. Another highlight of the Tornadoes history took place in July 1994 when they beat a visiting Canadian alumi team 19-18. They had travelled around Europe and had not been beaten until their visit to Dublin. Sadly, in November 1994 Coach Curran passed away, leaving the whole Irish American Football community stunned. His passing has since acted as an inspiration to their club to achieve higher goals. In 1995 they continued their tremendous record, going unbeaten through the year 10-0 and beating the Carrickfergus Knights again in the Shamrock Bowl by 44-12. The final was held in their home grounds at Islandbridge. 1996 continued as we left off. They went through the season unbeaten, 8-0 and again won the Irish League Title. However, they came up against very strong opposition in the Shamrock Bowl and were beaten by the Dublin Lightning, 24-12. 1997 was not been a successful year. Due to retirements and emigrations our player roster is down to a level that makes it unsafe for us to participate in this years Irish League. However, most of our squad will continue training with the newly formed Dublin Bulls in order to keep fit, alert and in football shape as well as to help out our latest new team find their feet in the world of American Football.
