BARRACUDA
Based: Orpington Rugby Club
Career Record: 12-1-0
Colours: White and sky blue
Honours: BNGL First Division runners-up 1990, conference champions 1990
1990 BNGL First Division South Eastern Conference 10-0-0*
Team notes: One season wonders. Came together in 1990, made up of players largely from the
Gravesend Lions (the coach was from the Barbarians) and competed in the BNGL First Division.
Went through the regular season undefeated before losing to the Barnsley Bears in the Bowl
final. In the final they only lost by 6 points although Barnsley had 56 players to their 28.
The name "Barracuda" was chosen due to the fearsome reputation of that
particular fish. A fish with an attitude to strike fear in to its adversaries!! With the
exception of the final, their results proved that the team had the same attitude as the fish.
Teams were simply brushed aside. Nothing to do with the choice of the name, but they ran a
very successful wishbone offence which became known as the 'Fishbone' because of the name
connection and possibly the fact that it stuck in the throat of all that played against
them!!!
Key players - QB Mark Rickwood, WR Richie Vale and RB Russ Turley
Started the 1991 season, but folded in May citing "financial difficulties". BNGL chief Dave
Quincey commented, "I know there were internal problems at the club, they certainly had plenty
of players".
